STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Advocacy
The student applies advocacy, marketing, and communication principles for entrepreneurial leadership
Artifacts for Advocacy
Librarians must evolve and adapt!
Librarians must be present and impactful!
Librarians must advocate and be business- savvy!
In addition to advocating for diversity and inclusion in librarianship; I also learned the importance of collaborating with others. It is important for Librarians to engage in community outreach initiatives. As a Librarian, it is important to build alliances with members of the communities ( non-profit organization, departments, businesses and more). In my role as a Graduate Assistant, I collaborated with various departments with organizing events and assisting in the utilization of the library's space for events and information resources and services. My supervisor, who is also the Director of the Teaching Resources Center, expressed to me the importance of building relationships with people outside of the library. She states, "It is important to be present and allow other organizations and departments to depend on your services because they will join you in advocating for your existence." I have since adapted her philosophy. I think this train of thought is extremely significant since many libraries have been facing budget cuts.
I also learned how to create marketing tools to promote the library services and material, such as LibGuides, Google Sites, Infographic Charts, Promotional Service Announcement Video and an E-Learning Resources Center. It is important to promote your libraries and services to the public so they can use your material and services. In LIS 650 Library Administration and Management, I learned how to effectively apply advocacy, marketing, and communication principles for entrepreneurial leadership in librarianship. In this course, I completed a research paper and presentation called, “Succession Planning and the Importance of Applying Succession Planning Efforts". I discussed the importance of Librarians taking the initiative to implement succession planning. The purpose of my research paper is to shed light on the importance of Succession Planning and how it relates to current and future librarians within the profession. In order to secure past librarians’ skills, and expertise within the profession and the organizations we serve, we must plan and prepare accordingly. Succession Planning embodies entrepreneurial leadership because Librarians coordinate various departments in the library. Librarians must create workflows and documentation while managing and communicating library systems and functions. Librarians must encourage current and future librarians to be proactive in implementing a plan and take action to preserve the profession and the specific organizations they belong too.
