I am ALA’s Spectrum Scholar currently serves as a committee member for ALA’s New Members Round Table: Student and Student Outreach Committee Chapter, and is the secretary of UNC -Greensboro ’s Library & Information Studies Student Association. I am also the ambassador for the Library & Information Studies Department, I attended conferences both local (North Carolina Library Association Conference) and national (National Conference of African American Librarians) where I recruited and informed potential students from diverse backgrounds about our program and university. I really enjoy advocating for our LIS department. I learned how important it speaks to people and let them know whats new at our school and the LIS department.
I have also attended NC Serial Conference, Metrolina Library Conference, and the Southern Eastern Law Libraries Conference to name a few. This summer I will be attending NASIG and ALA conference. I have learned so much from presenting and attending conferences. I have met so many librarians and sat in some very impressive forward-thinking sessions. As new librarian it is essential to be a part of the conversation. The library has so many facets and some many moving pieces. Attending conferences and networking with librarians from other institution has helped me stay on top of new technology, systems, and topics in the field. I started applying for student grants and receiving funding to participate in both local and national conferences.
One of the many perks of being an ALA Spectrum Scholar is free memberships to roundtables and division. Because I am curious and I love learning, I avoidably chose all of them! I recently signed up for NASIG and ALA mentorship programs and I am looking forward to receiving guidance and support as a new Librarian in the field. I attend local library and special collections events. I also conduct information interviews with librarians in the field. Conducting information interviews with current librarians has been the most beneficial tool thus far. I learned so much from asking questions and engaging in casual conversation. I really have received beneficial advice. It it is imperative in my career to continue to seek professional development opportunities through training, continue education and conferences.
