STUDENT LEARNING Objectives: RESEARCH
The student identifies, evaluates, conducts, and applies current research and thought in library and information studies and in other fields.
ResearcH Artifacts
I always experienced anxiety when it came to performing any type of research. I was terrified of research. I understand that it was my lack of knowledge and not my skillset. Research can be intimidating, but this program has helped me establish confidence while improving my researching skills. This semester I learned how to collect and interpret information. In LIS 600: Foundation to Libraries, I completed an Action and Advocacy project. I completed research paper about “Diversity in the workplace: Race, Ethnicity and Gender.” In this paper collected data about GTCC’s student body and population to determine whether GTCC library staff reflects the diverse population it served. I was able to make recommendations based on the information I collected and analyzed. I was very proud of myself. My reservation about research has seized and now I know I have the great foundation to conduct future research.
In my LIS 620: Information Sources and Services course, I created a LibGuide about the Golden Age of Hip Hop. I was very surprised when I completed my Golden Age: Hip Hop. I was nervous before completing this assignment because I did not have experience creating or using a LibGuide. Creating my very own LibGuide helped me gain experience and strengthen my researching skills. I was able to locate, identify and evaluate information for my LibGuide. I was very amazed how a LibGuide can provide information to people through different mediums. I honestly enjoyed learning this great information tool. I was able to create a LibGuide that showcased valuable music, books, videos and other resources about the Golden Era of Hip Hop. I received a great responses from my peers and my professor. I was listed as No. 4 on the popular LibGuide list. I astonished how beneficial a LibGuide can be for information discovery.
In LIS 623: Bibliographic Database Retrieval course, I learned about Bibliographic databases. Before this semester, I never fully utilized databases for my specific research needs. I learned the importance of access scholarly journals and full-text articles. In this class, I completed tutorials instructing others how to utilize LexisNexis. I explained basic and advance features. I also learned about Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT or AND NOT) and how these operators are used to combine or exclude keywords in a search. I now understand the importance of learning these features and now I am a better researcher because of this knowledge.
Lastly, after all these experiences I mustered up the courage to enroll into LIS 661: Library Information Science Research course. This course was an introductory course on research methods. I learned how to analyze and evaluate peer-review articles. I am now able to identify, review and analyze various sections from research articles. I learned about the components of an article: research processes, problem definition, experimental design, sampling, measurement, data collection and analysis. I am no longer terrified of research and I am now eager to help other students overcome their fears in regards to research.
In conclusion, I have a in-depth understanding how to identify, conduct and apply research and thought in library information studies and in other fields.
